2010 Lotus Europa i6 Mid-Engined Concept Study

2010 Lotus Europa i6 Mid-Engined Concept Study

It’s been a while since we last heard of South African designer Idries Noah but now he’s back, this time with a new design proposition called the Lotus Europa i6. According to Idries, the Europa i6 concept study is a mid-engined, rear wheel drive sports car inspired in terms of design by the classic Europa and Elite as well as by the latest Lotus models. The independent designer supports that ideally, the Europa i6 would weigh in at about 2,030 lbs (920 kg) with power coming from a 2.0-liter supercharged inline six-cylinder engine.

In theory, he says that the sports car would sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62mph) in 7 sec (someone’s being rather modest…) and on to a top speed of 165 mph or 265 km/h. Leaving aside the theoretical technical specs, Idries’ take on a compact mid-engined Lotus sports coupe hits the spot. Too bad it exists only in the digital world.

McLaren F2 Renderings Surface on the Web

McLaren F2 Renderings Surface on the Web

A Slovenian website called Avtomanija has published a group of photos of what seems to be a prototype version of the forthcoming McLaren F2 supercar that’s scheduled to be launched in late 2010. Of course, it goes without saying that these photos could be the work of a photoshop artist so don’t be hasty to draw a conclusion on the car’s appearance based on what you see here. McLaren’s new pure-bred two-seater will be based on the P8 mid-engined supercar project that was initially co-developed by the British automaker and Mercedes-Benz as a smaller and lower-priced successor to the SLR but was abandoned by the Germans in 2004. While details are still scarce, it is rumored said that the F2 will be equipped with a mid-mounted V8 powerplant from Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division.

Dodge Viper ACR is (Unofficially) the new King of the Ring with 7’22’’, Slays Both GT-R and ZR1

Dodge Viper ACR is (Unofficially) the new King of the Ring with 7’22’’, Slays Both GT-R and ZR1

The barely road-legal Dodge Viper ACR has shattered the Corvette ZR1’s Nurburgring time by a whopping 4.3 seconds according to the folks over at Motortrend – Dodge has yet to release an official announcement. On August 18, FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) driver Tom Coronel, who pilots a Leon TFSi for SEAT Team Holland, managed to turn the ‘Ring in his fourth attempt in an amazing 7:22.10. The ‘Ring war began in May when Nissan announced that the 480 HP GT-R lapped the infamous German race track in 7:29.03. About a month later, GM came out and said that its 640 HP supercharged Corvette ZR1 was the new ‘King of the Ring’ with a time of 7:26.40. -

The Dodge Viper ACR is essentially a race-track ready version of the stock Viper. While it retains the same 600 HP 8.4-liter V10 engine as the Viper SRT-10, it has undergone a strict diet and it features a racing suspension and clutch along with an aerodynamic bodykit.

According to the unofficial information provided by Motortrend, with the exception of the Racetech seat with a six-point harness, the ACRs (Dodge brought two vehicles to the ‘Ring) were factory stock and fitted with the no-cost option Hard Core package that sheds another 40 pounds with the elimination of the audio system, trunk carpet, rear cabin sound insulation, tire inflator kit, hood insulator, and steel battery cover.

Audi R8 GT3 Race Version with 500+ HP and Rear-Wheel-Drive!

Audi R8 GT3 Race Version with 500+ HP and Rear-Wheel-Drive!

For the first time in its history, Audi is offering customers the chance to buy a racing sports car in the form of the GT3 version of the R8 coupe. "The R8 is the first production Audi bearing the name and genes of a successful racing sportscar and is therefore an excellent base from which to build up our first big customer sport program,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "Ever since the R8 was unveiled we’ve been inundated with enquiries about a race version.” Available for order from autumn 2009, the R8 GT3 will be able to participate in numerous national and international race series.

Given that the GT3 regulations prohibit the use of four-wheel drive, Audi’s race-spec sportscar comes with a rear-wheel-drive powertrain. The German automaker hasn’t given out all the details yet, but it did say that the mid-engined R8 GT3 will deliver more than 500 HP from the modified V8 engine. Power will be transmitted to the rear wheels via a newly developed six-speed sequential sports gearbox while the suspension will use almost exclusively components from the production model.

As you can see in the pictures, Audi has developed a full aerodynamic bodykit for the R8 GT3 that includes a modified front end and a large rear-wing to generate the required downforce. The R8 GT3 will also feature the necessary safety equipment to guarantee the well being of the driver in the case of an accident. The first test races of the race-prepped R8 in various European racing series are scheduled for the 2009 season.

Safety Belts

Automakers are providing safety belts worldwide.
For all the safety technology available, safety belts are the most effective safety tools ever implemented. Making them universally standard is critical now in order to prevent potential increases in traffic fatalities, as developing countries increase auto use 18 percent annually. In 2006, 17 automakers joined together to commit to advancing safety belts worldwide.
Safety belts must be buckled to save lives.
The most significant and immediate opportunities to reduce injuries are through changes to driver behavior – especially buckling safety belts. Automakers have committed to various initiatives to support safety belt use, including working with governments to encourage the adoption of and effective enforcement of laws requiring safety belt usage.
Road safety is a shared responsibility.
Automakers are strongly committed to being part of the solution, and other stakeholders have an extremely important share in road safety. Road safety is built on three pillars: the vehicle, the road user and the infrastructure. Overall, about 95 percent of road accidents can be attributed to driver behavior. Traffic rules must be established and obeyed by the general public, following education and enforcement campaigns. Road construction and maintenance must follow the best international practice. Only through a combination of efforts by all parties involved can road safety be further improved and mobility remain sustainable.

There is absolutely no doubt that the single most effective thing that every vehicle occupant can do to help save their own life if they have an accident, is to wear their safety belt. Safety belts hold the occupant, preventing ejection from the car and hitting an outside obstacle. The forces at play in even an average low speed accident are tremendous and people who think they can restrain themselves by firmly holding the steering wheel would have to be able to lift a mass equivalent to more than 30 times their own, which clearly would be superhuman!
Many vehicles are now equipped with most sophisticated safety belt technologies, such as pre-tensioners (tightening the belt in the very early phases of the accident - or even before the accident occurs!) and energy absorbing belts (gradually absorbing the deceleration energy, thereby avoiding chest compression).

Chils passenger Safety

If you’re carrying children in a vehicle, they need a suitable restraint – either a properly fitted child seat, or a booster cushion to go with the adult belt.
New systems to attach the child safety seat in the vehicle have been developed and are now widely available. These systems provide a standard interface between the child seat and the car seat. This interface consists of rigid anchorages, with hooks on the child seat connecting to bars in the vehicle (ISOFIX system) or flexible, with belts on the child seat connected to the bars in the vehicle (LATCH system)

Global Efforts

Globally harmonized safety standards benefit all countries.
Road safety worldwide will be best served if viewed from a global perspective. International harmonization will help ensure that vehicles meet the same basic specifications worldwide and are equipped with the necessary features. As the accredited representative of the worldwide vehicle industry, OICA is now working with governments and the UN to develop global technical regulations on a wide range of safety issues, notably pedestrian protection.

New Technologies

Automakers are continually making safety technology advancements.
Automobile manufacturers have developed today’s automobiles with greatly improved safety systems and many important safety features, making new vehicles safer than ever. Vehicle braking, stability and lighting have been improved far beyond the levels required by legislation, by a mixture of technical evolution and advanced technology, making cars more able to avoid accidents. Accident survivability has also been improved well ahead of legislation by designing cars to deform in a controlled way in frontal, side and rear impacts and by the addition of advanced restraint and airbag systems. Tomorrow’s safety technologies are in research and development and in some cases even on the production line today.
